Midnight Rambler wins the Port Hacking race

Midnight Rambler, the Ker 40, owned by Ed Psaltis, Bob Thomas and Michael Bencsik, claimed the overall win in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Port Hacking Race today, edging out defending series title holder Julian Farren-Price and his Cookson 12 About Time and Occasional Coarse Language Too, Warwick Sherman’s GTS Ker 43.

Darryl Hodgkinson’s Cookson 50 Victoire, the 2013 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race overall winner and one of the largest boats in today’s race, was the first boat home, crossing the finish line at 15:08:34. Sean Kirkjian, Hodgkinson’s right hand man, was at the helm today in the absence of the Sydney plastic surgeon.

“It was a good day. We opted to go out to sea to see if we could find more breeze, but it didn’t quite work out for us,” Kirkjian said. “Coming home, as the breeze swung around to the south-east, we got caught out and others were able to sail inside of us and we had to gybe back into Bondi to avoid losing too much time and ground.”

Victoire finished 18 minutes ahead of David Forbes’ Kaiko 52 Merlin with Midnight Rambler three minutes behind. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL STORY

Passing of Ted Kaufman

Dear Members

On behalf of my fellow Flag Officers and members of the board, it is my sad duty to inform you that Harry 'Ted' Kaufman, a member of the club since 1956, passed away on Saturday 1 February 2014.

Ted was a renowned yacht designer and sailor, and a vintage car enthusiast. Some of the famous yachts he designed included Mercedes III, which was part of the CYCA team that won the 1967 Admiral's Cup and Koomooloo (which he co-designed with the late Ben Lexcen (Bob Miller)).

Details of a funeral service are yet to be announced by the Kaufman family. When those arrangements are known, a suitable announcement will be made for those who wish to pay their respects.

Yours sincerely

Howard Piggott
Commodore

Blue Water Pointscore and Ocean Pointscore Survey – Have Your Say!

Since the 2011-2012 Blue Water Pointscore Season, the Sailing Committee has implemented a number of changes to the Blue Water Pointscore. Continued improvement and refinement of this series continues, and as such, the Sailing Committee is once again seeking feedback from you the competitor, on how to continue to improve the prestigious Blue Water Pointscore.
The Sailing Committee is considering adding races with additional new and reintroduced courses into the Blue Water Pointscore series and are currently undertaking quite possibly the largest reorganisation of the Summer Sailing Calendar in recent years. The planned outcome is to allow yacht owners to enter in and compete in both the Blue Water Pointscore and the Ocean Pointscore series without missing multiple races, whilst allowing suitable rest time in between.
The Sailing Committee is therefore keen to seek the feedback of yacht owners and crew alike within the Blue Water Pointscore and Ocean Pointscore series.
The 2014-2015 Blue Water Pointscore Series is scheduled to commence with the Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race on 26 July 2014, and conclude with the 70th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starting on 26 December 2014.

Owners, Skippers and Crew of yachts competing in the Blue Water Pointscore and Ocean Pointscore series are invited to participate in this survey Log on to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CYCA_Survey_2014_BWPS to complete the survey.

Your assistance in completing the survey prior to Friday 28 February 2014 is greatly appreciated.

The Sailing Committee looks forward to receiving your responses.

Vice Commodore John Cameron, Sailing Committee Chairman.
