Marine Safety Day –  10am, Sunday 30 October
Have you booked yet for this Sunday’s Marine Safety Day? Co-ordinating all of the participating marine safety experts requires a great deal of time and effort and the committee headed up by Cruising Committee Chair Tony Kirby with John Keelty, Denis Doyle and Yulia Shutova, with administrative support by Barbara Buttery, are to be commended. The club is also very appreciative of the support of the participating organisations who will be sharing their expertise and updating attendees on the latest safety devices and procedures, including a new safety app. The experts in attendance are from across a range of marine safety areas including:

  • Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA)
  • Kordia Communications
  • NSW Ambulance Helicopter
  • NSW Police
  • Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) and
  • Volunteer Marine Rescue NSW and others

From 12.30pm watch live demonstrations of flares and life jackets, in addition to the two patrol vessels in the pond. A helicopter demonstration will take place at 2.30pm in adjoining Rushcutters Bay Park.

CYCA SOLAS Trusts Dinner
The 2016 CYCA SOLAS Trusts Dinner last Friday raised nearly $30,000 with the hard work yet again of Kendi and David Kellett, Pam Messenger, the CYCA Associates Committee and the many others who contributed their time and donated prizes.

The very personal insight given by the guest speaker Mat Belcher (pictured) into the highs and lows of his most recent Olympic campaign, and the value he placed on the personal and professional support he received, produced both laughter and some very sombre moments for the 130 guests in attendance.

Mat Belcher and his Silver-medal winning team mate and YSA graduate, Will Ryan, are impressive young men both on and off the water and Mat’s Friday night performance was deserving of a gold medal!

SHARP Australian Youth Match Racing Championship
Congratulations to our own CYCA team of Harry Price, Ben Robinson, Harry Morton, John Cooley and Hugo Stoner for taking out the 2016 SHARP Australian Youth Match Racing Championship. Check out the final regatta placings here.

The off-water Youth Sailing Academy team including Pam Scrivenor and Head Coach Jordan Reece are also to be congratulated for their efforts in the staging of this event with its three-year sponsorship by SHARP.

Capturing all the on-water action in photographs and video was Member Hamish Hardy. Check out Hamish’s work on the CYCA Youth Sailing Academy Facebook page.

New On-Line Shop
The CYCA is pleased to announce an update to the on-line shop with new operating system Shopify, and launch of the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race event range. Be among the first to check out the new look shop and purchase items. Merchandise is supplied by Club sponsors Musto.

Volunteer Availability
Registered volunteers will soon receive a breakdown of roles where we require assistance with some on-site functions, in addition to the manning of the Information Marquee and the issuing of Crew Packs.

On the request of Rolex, the issuing of Crew shirts will be done at the Rolex Marquee in Hobart this year, not in Sydney as has previously occurred.  We will however need volunteer assistance to pack the crew shirts here in Sydney into the Rolex Bags in preparation for them being transported to Hobart.

Function dates to note include:

  • 5-8 December – Sydney Race Village bump-in assistance
  • 9 December – Inaugural Corporate Luncheon
  • 22 December – Official launch and Skippers Party
  • 26 December – Family Day in the Sydney Race Village

These functions will entail role including VIP Meet and Greet – Government officials, sponsors and other dignitaries, assisting with the issuing of names badges, selling raffle tickets and assisting in showing guests around the club.

And finally, there are only two days left to book for the Halloween 'Spooktacular' Party on Saturday 29 October. Book your tickets here!

Australian Hydrographic Service Information Night with Mike Prince

Have you ever wondered which parts of a chart are good, and which are unreliable? How can you tell? While electronic charts may be popular, have you wondered if there are differences between official and commercial brands? There are many myths and misunderstandings surrounding electronic charts. These can mean the difference between a good day's sailing, and a very bad one.
