Onshore Edition 96 - Monday 5 December
Message from the CEO

The club had its own ‘Black’ Friday last Friday when a fire in a sub-station in neighbouring Loftus Road left the club without power for 13 hours, after initially being told it could be three hours.

Whilst candle light may be romantic under most circumstances, it was hardly sufficient to keep the club fully operational, not to mention toilets that required power to pump the sewerage away, cash registers that couldn’t operate and electricity required to keep the food, beer and wine cold.

We relocated one function group who were already on site to the Lord Dudley, but the organisers of the 6:30pm function had no way of contacting nearly 200 guests to advise them not to come to the club.

Given they were arriving on our doorstep, the decision was made to revamp the function format with safety our key concern.

Had this function not been on, the club would not have been open at all.

Food loss was minimised due to the onsite refrigeration unit brought into service the race village.

It was a great team effort with everyone rallying to keep the site safe until power was restored at around 4am Saturday morning, with coffee and bacon and egg rolls available from 7:30am in the Bistro.

We apologise for the disappointment for Members and guests not being able to have the bars and bistro operational, on a Friday night especially, but it was outside of our control.

Spring Series comes to an end

A total of 23 boats competed in this year’s Grant Thornton Short Ocean Pointscore series and 33 in the Short Haul races, David Brogan was out and captured all the action from the racing, which you can see on the CYCA Facebook Page. This week also sees the end of the Monday and Wednesday night Twilight Races sponsored by Makers Mark and Club Marine.

CYCA Trophy

Entries close at 1700 on Wednesday, 7 December, for next weekend’s CYCA Trophy Series - 10/11 December. For further information on the CYCA Trophy Series download the Notice of Race. Online entry can be made here

Big Boat Challenge

Members will be able to watch live yacht tracking of the 2016 Race courtesy of coverage sponsor ‘nots by Heckmann’ on the large outdoor screen erected in the Sydney Race Village.

Boats will be fitted with Trac Trac trackers for the first time. These are the same trackers used by the Extreme Sailing Series on Sydney Harbour 8-12 December.

The public can once again bid on eBay for a spot on one of three RSHYR super-maxis (Wild Oats XI, Black Jack and Perpetual LOYAL), participating in the 2016 CYCA SOLAS Big Boat Challenge.

RSHYR Update

Following a very successful media launch last Wednesday, the interest in this year’s race is certainly gaining momentum especially in Asia, not surprising given we have five entrants from this part of the world in the race this year - China (2), Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.

Rupert Henry’s Chinese Whisper and Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban finished top two respectively in the 85 nautical mile Bird Island Race on the weekend cementing their places among favourites for the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Read more here.

Inaugural Corporate Luncheon

This Friday we have our Inaugural, (and I’m pleased to say, ‘Sold Out’), Corporate Luncheon with attendance by the Minister of Sport, The Hon. Stuart Ayres MP, the Rear Admiral of the Navy, Stuart Mayer and his wife, General Manager of Rolex Australia, Patrick Boutellier, Stephen McCallum representing our finishing partner RYCT, Ms Sarah Courtney MP representing the Premier of Tasmania, Australian Sailing President Matt Allen, and a number of event support sponsors.

We are also honoured to have not only the 2015 Tattersalls Cup winner Paul Clitheroe as our guest speaker, but in attendance will be another six Tattersalls Cup winners - Dr Daryl Hodgkinson (2013), Sandy Oatley and Mark Richards (2012), Bob Steele (2008) Lindsay May (2006), Geoff Ross (1999) and Ed Psaltis (1998).

JANUS et Cie sign on with CYCA for 5 years (Picture is JANUS et Cie Manager Steve Liggett and CYCA Commodore John Markos, with the Tattersall's Cup Trophy)

When the Race Village is erected this week, the icing on the cake will be the installation of JANUS et Cie furniture. You can read more about this wonderful partnership with the club and look forward to special benefits for CYCA Members to enjoy in 2017.

CCTV System installation

The first phase of our CCTV upgrade occurs this week with coverage extended into the larger car park, the hardstand and parts of the Marina. This will ensure future breakages of the boom gate will be charged back to those causing the damage.

Berthing and Parking

This is the time of year when we ask Members (where possible) to vacate their berthings to accommodate boats preparing, training and then competing in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, as well as relocating boats off the hardstand for the construction of the Race Village. We very much appreciate the support of Members in assisting us with these requests.

On the flipside though, there are a few people whose actions are anything but in the spirit of co-operation. This includes outstaying the 10am departure time, negatively impacting on another boat who has booked that spot and then other boats occupying a berthing without any prior booking at all, especially when the space has a prior booking.

These are just a couple of issues that have come to my attention of late and with such busy time of the year these type of unthinking actions are even more impactful.

Parking with the consideration of others is also paramount at this time of the year. During the race village bump in, there is no parking in the smaller car park.

And finally,

Extreme Sailing

Have you booked yet for tomorrow night’s tour (Land Rover Bar GC 32) and talk by the skipper? Arrive before 6:30pm to have a tour of the boat, and then move upstairs to the Freya Room for the Q&A evening.

Chinese Whisper wins Bird Island Race for a second year

A year ago Rupert Henry’s Chinese Whisper and Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban finished top two respectively in the 85 nautical mile Bird Island Race – and the two have mirrored that result this weekend, cementing their places among favourites for the 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.

Bird Island Race - last chance ahead of Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race

Two races remain to complete the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s prestigious Blue Water Pointscore (BWPS) - the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race - and this weekend’s 85 nautical mile Bird Island Race – a last chance to put in some decent ocean miles and suss out the competition ahead of the 628 nautical mile race starting on Boxing Day.
