Onshore Edition 99 - Wednesday 28 December
Message from the CEO

Postcard from Hobart

The 2016 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, my first in a year of firsts, was a breathtaking and somewhat emotional experience both at the beginning and end. I can’t remember when I last pulled an all-nighter, getting to bed at 5.30am this morning, saturated with the early morning downpour and with the odd spray of Mumm champagne.

Motoring alongside Perpetual Loyal as she made her way to  the awaiting crowd dockside at 2.30am, and then to see a beaming Brad Kellett accept his Line Honours medal whilst notching up 25 races (pictured), gave the 2016 RSHYR a very personal face for me. This is an amazing experience which I will never take for granted or forget in a hurry.

From a Club perspective, we made history this year with live coverage of the race start in Mainland China for the first time ever through the online network of Le Sport, in addition to Fox Asia taking the race start live. In fact over 196 countries viewed the race start and yacht tracker, with live streaming access for our international audiences this year.

Whilst this week’s edition of Onshore is a short one, my last few words are those of thanks to the volunteers, Club committees, event sponsors, a diverse range of contractors, my CYCA staff and the Board under the helm of Commodore John Markos.

The support of a sponsor like Rolex is also greatly appreciated. They add class and further enhance the credibility of our iconic race.

Whilst being mindful of the dangers in singling out individuals at a time like this, a very special acknowledgement must go to our CYCA Operations Manager, Michael Neumann, who was also the Production Manager of both the Sydney and Hobart Race Villages this year. Michael did an amazing job in making both of these villages come together. This was a challenging and often stressful process, but the end result has achieved many compliments for the Club in both Sydney and Hobart.

So, I’m signing off from a very wet and gloomy-looking Hobart, but we have welcomes ahead for many more boats…once the wind finally picks up and they stop going backwards!

LDV Comanche secures line honours and the race record

Sport is often determined by fine margins and yachting is no exception. After a phenomenal contest between Jim Cooney’s LDV Comanche and the Oatley family’s Wild Oats XI over the full 628nm of the Rolex Sydney Hobart concluded yesterday in the Derwent River, the line honours title for first to finish was eventually decided today in the protest room. An incident between the two 100-footers, shortly after the start, was adjudged in favour of LDV Comanche.
