Onshore Edition 129 - Monday 24 July
Message from the CEO

Last week was quite a mixed bag starting with the 2017 AGM on Tuesday night, July Board meeting Wednesday night and Winter Series Prize Giving function last Friday night.

Turnout for the AGM, which saw the 2016-2017 Flag Officers re-elected unopposed and the four Directors re-elected after a ballot, was 104 Members.

Eight Members were recognised for their 50 years of Membership with the club, along with Life Membership awarded to Alan Green and Kendi Kellett for their outstanding service to the club. The Commodores Medal recipients were Andrew Copley and Tim Cox for their contributions to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race through the Radio Relay Vessel “JBW’ and Chairman of the Race Management Committee respectively.

Questions from the floor ranged from matters concerning the archives, the status of the Club’s relationship with Rolex, catering, the marina and the lack of tidiness of the hardstand and carpark.

Last Friday night the Freya Room became a less formal setting when ‘points of order’ became ‘pints to order’ and ‘information requests’ turned to ‘song requests’.

With the prize-giving formalities admirably kept to a minimum by Sailing Committee Chairman and Rear Commodore Noel Cornish, the DJ cranked up the ‘oldies but goodies’ playlist and the action turned to the dance floor and the photo booth.

Hopefully those in attendance will agree that going from ‘formal’ to ‘fun’ was also a winner on the night - everyone mingled more freely and mixed with other Members, rather than being trapped at a table most of the night!

My thanks to Justine, Stephen, Tara and Olivia in the Sailing office for their efforts in co-ordinating the formalities and Christina and Marina for the informalities.

Live coverage of LRSGCYR start

The CYCA will be live streaming the start of the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race for friends, families and sailing enthusiasts around the world to watch with drone video and live commentary adding a new dimension to one of Australia's biggest offshore races.

The broadcast, brought to you by Noakes Boat and Shipyards, will be available publicly on the CYCA Facebook page, the YouTube channel CYCA TV and also at the LRSGCYR website,, starting at 1230hrs on Saturday 29 June. The stream will also be shown in the club.

The footage will be shot by drone allowing steady, low access video giving viewers clear oversight on the action, as well as boat-based cameras delving into the heart of the racing. This initiative is a new and positive step for the club exposing our high quality racing and allowing it to be viewed by wider audiences. We hope you enjoy the show!

Marina Management Update

The marina is undergoing its annual service. This includes the replacement of the nuts on the through rods due to corrosion, and wear and tear. The pile guides will also be inspected and replaced as required.

Last year all the marina power outlets were upgraded to the new industry-standard outlets for better water-proofing and reduced risk of corrosion to members shore power leads, along with a new fire hydrant and new and additional fire hoses installed.

A new berthing policy was also implemented over the last 12 months to give members guidance on mooring line specifications. Gradually we expect all boat owners to adhere to this policy as their mooring lines require replacement.

We are also looking at a reconfiguration of the end of A-Arm to improve ease of movement in and out of berths, improve safety and hopefully gain an additional berth.

Mat Belcher

The CYCA would like to congratulate Mat Belcher in becoming Australia's most successful Olympic-class skipper, winning his 7th world sailing title. Away from sailing Mat provided a very moving speech at last year's SOLAS dinner at the CYCA. A true winner on and off the water.

CYCA Rani Room — 6.30pm

Guest Speakers; Evan Hodge and Kelly Clark of Nashira, a Bavaria Ocean 40, share their passion, preparation and anxiety as they prepared for their first cruising adventure to Tasmania.

Very new to yachting Evan, who had experience sailing dinghies and skiffs as a young boy, faced new challenges sailing as an 'above knee' amputee and Kelly having never sailed, embarked on a 6 day sailing course which ultimately changed the trajectory of their lives. They bought Nashira 3 months later.

Two and a half years after buying the boat they headed off on a 10 week adventure to Tasmania, crossing Bass Strait, sailing down the East Coast, then down and around to Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour.

They will share stories and photos of their trip including the preparation around safety, communications, victualing, route and weather planning and the anxiety of the unknown.
