Bob Oatley's Wild Oats XI on Day 3 of the Rolex Trophy

With one day’s racing remaining in the Rolex Trophy – Rating Series, Wild Oats XI, one of the two new 30m, canting keel maxis that are expected to dominate the race for line honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has withdrawn from the Trophy for modifications.

The yacht withdrew from the series just minutes into the second race of the day and is expected to be out of the water for the next three days.

Earlier Wild Oats XI had won her division in the first race of the day, crossing the line three minutes 50 seconds ahead of Alfa Romeo despite a remarkable fightback by the New Zealand maxi.

Alfa Romeo demonstrated yet again her remarkable boatspeed after a shocking start to the first race, when she was forced to thread her way through a congested fleet to restart after crossing the line early.  The maneouvre cost her precious time, Wild Oats XI and Konica Minolta opening a big gap as they stormed towards the first  windward mark.

As the giant yachts approached the second mark, though, Alfa Romeo appeared to be closing the gap on her rivals when their spinnaker ripped just above the clew, forcing Alfa Romeo to sail past the bottom mark and off the course as her crew struggled to recover the giant sail and get the boat racing again.

At the top mark Wild Oats XI turned with a clear lead over Konica Minolta, but incredibly Alfa Romeo had again caught up, rounding the mark just boat lengths behind Stewart Thwaites’ more conventional, fixed keel maxi.  Clear of the mark, Alfa Romeo launched a new spinnaker, sliced inside Konica Minolta and surged away– all that was missing was a wave goodbye.

By the start of the second race of the day, the water off Sydney Heads looked more like the Southern Ocean as a storm cell brought darkness, 3m swells and rain to the fleet.  It could have been a practice run for the impending journey to Hobart as wet weather gear was brought out and the boats battled the rising seas.

This time Alfa Romeo made no mistakes and with, Wild Oats XI heading back to Sydney, the New Zealander led the fleet around the course unchallenged.

The provisional pointscore at the end of day three sees Alfa Romeo in first place in Division 0 IRC, with Wild Oats XI second, Stephen Ainsworth’s Loki  third and Living Doll fourth.  AAPT did not compete today.

In IRC Division 1, also for higher rating boats, just one point separates Konica Minolta from Yendys while in IRC Division 2 for lower rating boats, Ray Roberts’ Quantum Racing will go into the final day’s racing with a handy four point lead over Ginger.

However, Quantum Racing has lodged a protest against Ginger over a mark rounding incident.

Quantum Racing has proven to be the most consistent yacht in the fleet, winning both races today for an almost perfect score for the series so far.  Roberts has won five races in his division, with a second place in race four the only blemish.  Quantum Racing is widely regarded as the benchmark among the mid-size yachts in the Rolex Sydney Hobart, competing for an Overall win on handicap.

After six of the scheduled eight races completed, the progressive pointscore for the Rolex Trophy – Rating Series provisionally stands at:

IRC Division O:

 1. Alfa Romeo, Reichel/Pugh 98 (Neville Crichton, RNZYS) 1-1-DNC-1-3-1, 7 pts
