The 2017 Australian Yachting Championship will be hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia this March 23 to 26. The regatta returns to News South Wales for the first time since 2014, when Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club hosted the regatta and Karl Kwok won his first Championship with Team Beau Geste.
Since 2014, Team Beau Geste have won the Championship crown every year and are amongst the entries this year with their eyes on the quadruple.
"The skills of the competitors and the sailing conditions are always very challenging," Kwok said. "I am indeed looking forward to the four days of racing at this year's championships and if we are good enough to get onto the podium, it will be a bonus."
The three-time Championship winners from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron enjoy coming across 'the ditch' to contest the annual Australian Sailing event.
"I have had very enjoyable experiences at the Australian Yachting Championships over the past three years," Kwok commented. "I believe that Australia attracts the most competitive fleet of 50-plus footers in the world."
As well as appealing to international competitors, the Australian Yachting Championship is a hotly contested national event with entries from New South Wales and Queensland inspiring 'state of origin' type battles to keep things interesting. In recent years, the championship has been hosted in conjunction with Hamilton Island Race Week, attracting entries from the southern states of Victoria and Tasmanian with the warmer waters enticing competitors.
The 2017 Australian Yachting Championship will be contested over four days with entries across IRC, ORCi and PHS. Registrations are open so do not miss your opportunity to sail in this prestigious Australian Sailing event.
