Balance edges closer to Mount Gay Ocean Pointscore series victory

A fleet of 22 were entered for Race 7 of the CYCA’s Mount Gay Ocean Pointscore, the Sydney Newcastle Yacht Race, on Saturday morning with Paul Clitheroe’s TP 52, Balance, making it three wins in a row.

Securing the victory on IRC division 1 over Julian Farren-Price’s Cookson 50, About Time, the result extends Clitheroe’s lead on the overall series on IRC and ORCi with just one race to go. Balance also topped About Time on ORCI while David Gotze’s Lyons 60, Triton, took out the PHS division.

Close to 20 knots from the North East greeted the competitors at the 0900hrs start in Sydney Harbour with Farren-Price’s crew enduring a long day, “We were spending most of the time doing 9-10 knots directly at Newcastle. It was a good fast run, perhaps a little bit boring for the crew, they literally sat on the side of the boat for 7 hours!”

Finishing second to Balance was not the ideal result for Farren-Price but the About Time owner was quick to highlight the positives, “I thought when we started out on the boat that my expectations were being exceeded. I think what we’re getting now is more what I expected. A boat like Balance with that amount of experience is going to be very very hard to beat. It’s sailed very well and we have to lift our game a bit.”

“We needed to find 0.13 knots of speed to beat them on Saturday. I’m sure that with fine tuning the boat, the crew and the equipment we can find that speed, we just don’t have it yet.”
