Commodore John Markos, together with CYCA SOLAS Trusts Chairman Matt Allen and the CYCA Associates Committee hosted 130 Members and guests at the CYCA SOLAS Trusts Fundraising Dinner. Olympic Gold and Silver Medallist Mathew Belcher was the guest speaker, with the event raising nearly $30,000 for the CYCA SOLAS Trusts.
Among the guests were past Commodores of the CYCA Kerry Roxburgh, John Brooks, John Messenger, Hans Sommer, Garry Linacre and David Kellett, as MC. Also attending the evening were CYCA Board Members Leander Khols, Tony Kirby, Arthur Lane and Paul Billingham, Commodore of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Richard Chapman, and a visiting guest from the Chinese Taipei Government, Mr. Larry Lee.
Dual Olympic Medallist Mathew Belcher gave guests a unique insight into his most recent Olympic campaign, in which he won a Silver Medal in the 470 Men’s Class with YSA graduate Will Ryan, in Rio in August this year. The room was silent whilst he gave very personal details of the highs and lows of their campaign, and expressed how honoured he was to be asked to attend the evening in support of the CYCA SOLAS Trusts.
Chairman Matt Allen regrettably announced his resignation from the role, but also advised of the welcome appointment of David Kellett as the new Chairman. Matt will however remain on the Board of SOLAS.
“It’s been a terrific honour for me to be a part of SOLAS for such a long period of time,” Matt commented as Chairman of nearly ten years.
“The 1998 Sydney Hobart Race was the reason SOLAS was set up, but not the reason why it continues today.”
Incoming Chairman David Kellett commented, “Matt has done a tremendous job developing the CYCA SOLAS Trusts, and I’m looking forward to continuing to develop it into the future. The Trusts have done a huge job of fundraising over the past ten years, Matt is to be commended for his effort, and I thank him for this opportunity.”
The silent auction items were wildly contested, along with the spirited live auction for a harbour cruise on Matt Allen’s boat ‘MOOCHALONG’, with bidders trying to one up each other to take the prize, which was ultimately scored by Donald Graham.
Matt Allen and David Kellett expressed their thanks for those organisations and individuals who donated prizes, and also recognised the efforts of Kendi Kellett and her team in convening the event.
CYCA SOLAS Trusts Dinner a huge success
