Welcoming Eden to Sydney

In December, yachts in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race sail past Eden on their way to Hobart. Eden is the first stop and sometimes the end of the race and the Eden community is always on hand to assist with everything our sailors need from accommodation and car hire to a hot meal and commiserations.

Since 1994 the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia has returned the favour and welcomed students from Eden Marine High for a week long program of sailing, shopping, movies and restaurants.

This year 20 students along with their teachers, Robyn, Jane and James arrived at the CYCA after a long bus and train ride from Eden via Canberra.  After dropping their suitcases in at the YSA, getting a quick tour of the yacht club and finding the important places such as hot showers and coffee shops, the team trekked off to Phillips Foote Restaurant in the Rocks for a steak dinner hosted by CYCA member, Howard Dredge.

After dinner the students grabbed their sleeping bags and pillows and head down the road to spend their first night on the harbour, sleeping on board some of East Sail’s fleet of luxury yachts.

After breakfast at the YSA the next morning, was an introduction to the fleet of Elliott 7s and the six Advanced Squad sailors who will be coaching the sessions each day.  An adventure tour around the islands, past the Opera House and under the Harbour Bridge, many students had not been on the Harbour before. The day finished with a movie at Event Cinemas in George Street thanks to CYCA member, John Kirby.

The following days were filled with more sailing to Watsons Bay and Balmoral stopping for lunch each day, picking up moorings and taking a picnic lunch ashore.  The CYCA members were all very generous with their offers to take the Eden sailors out for the Club Marine Twilight Race on Wednesday evening.

The sailing course finished with races at the end of the week with more sights of Sydney to see sailing past Taronga Zoo, Kirribilli House and Admiralty House.  Racing with spinnakers up, the coaches all ‘hands-off’ for the day.  It was great to see how much the Eden sailors picked up during the week in their confidence and sailing.

We look forward to hosting the Eden sailors again in 2016 and hope that they do not get too many visitors in Eden after the Boxing Day start.
